What an online sleep study is

An online sleep study lets you get evaluated for obstructive sleep apnea without ever setting foot in a sleep lab. You complete an intake online, a board-certified sleep physician reviews it and orders the test, an FDA-approved device ships to your door, and your results are emailed to you. It is the same clinical pathway that has traditionally started with a clinic visit — reorganized so the parts that do not require a building happen from home.

To be precise about terminology: what happens online is a home sleep apnea test (HSAT), a doctor-ordered study you perform overnight in your own bed. A full in-lab polysomnography cannot be done from home — but for most adults being evaluated for sleep apnea, an in-lab study is not necessary.

Home sleep test vs. in-lab study, briefly

A home sleep apnea test uses a portable device to record the signals that matter for diagnosing sleep apnea — airflow, breathing effort, oxygen saturation, and heart rate — while you sleep normally. An in-lab polysomnography is a comprehensive overnight study in a laboratory that also records brain waves, eye movement, and muscle activity, and is used for complex cases or when other sleep disorders are suspected.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine considers a technically adequate home sleep apnea test an accepted alternative to in-lab polysomnography for diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea in uncomplicated adults at increased risk of moderate-to-severe disease. Your physician determines which test fits your situation.

How an online sleep study works with Nocturne Health

  1. Complete a short online intake

You fill out a short intake form about your sleep, symptoms, and health history, then have a brief telemedicine video visit with a physician — typically under 5 minutes — to approve your home sleep test. The video visit is included in the price.

  2. The test ships to your door

An FDA-approved home sleep apnea testing device is mailed directly to you — no lab, no waiting list. It records airflow, breathing effort, oxygen levels, and heart rate while you sleep in your own bed.

  3. Test at home for three nights

You wear the device for three nights, then return it with the prepaid label. Unlike services that score a single night, testing across three nights in your own bed accounts for night-to-night variation — so your result reflects how you actually sleep, not one unrepresentative night.

  4. Get your results

A board-certified sleep physician interprets your recording — results are typically ready within 72 hours — and your sleep study report is emailed to you. If the study shows obstructive sleep apnea, a consultation is recommended (not required) to discuss treatment.

Order it standalone or with a consultation

The home sleep apnea test is $169 and includes a brief telemedicine video visit — typically under 5 minutes — to review your intake form and approve the test. No separate consultation fee. Your sleep study report is emailed to you when it is ready.

If the study shows obstructive sleep apnea, we recommend (but do not require) a consultation to discuss treatment options. Patients who already know they want to start CPAP can be issued an online CPAP prescription at no additional charge. A full consultation ($199) remains available for anyone who wants to talk through their results and options.

Online sleep study: common questions

Can I really do a sleep study online?

You can complete the entire diagnostic process for obstructive sleep apnea online. You fill out an intake, a board-certified sleep physician reviews it and orders an FDA-approved home sleep apnea test, the device ships to your home, and your results are emailed to you. What you cannot do fully online is an in-lab polysomnography, which requires spending a night in a sleep laboratory and is reserved for more complex cases.

What is the difference between a home sleep test and an in-lab study?

A home sleep apnea test (HSAT) is a simplified study you perform in your own bed with a portable FDA-approved device that records breathing, airflow, and oxygen levels. An in-lab polysomnography (PSG) is a comprehensive overnight study in a sleep laboratory with sensors for brain waves, muscle activity, and more. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine considers a home test an accepted alternative to in-lab testing for diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea in uncomplicated adults at increased risk of moderate-to-severe disease. In-lab studies remain the reference standard for complex cases.

Do I have to book a consultation to get a sleep study?

No full consultation required. The $169 includes a brief telemedicine video visit — typically under 5 minutes — where a physician reviews your intake form and approves the test. Your test results are sent to you. If you'd like a longer discussion about your sleep before or after testing, a full initial consultation is available for $199.

Do I need insurance or a referral?

No. Nocturne Health is a cash-pay practice — no insurance, referral, or prior authorization required. All services are HSA/FSA eligible, and we can provide an itemized receipt.

How quickly will I get my results?

Most patients receive interpreted results within 72 hours of returning the device. Your sleep study report is emailed to you, and a consultation is available whenever you want to review it with a physician.
