Sleep study without insurance: why the price is clear

When a sleep study runs through insurance, your final cost depends on your deductible, your coinsurance, whether the lab and the interpreting physician are in-network, and whether prior authorization was obtained first. Many people do not learn what they owe until an explanation of benefits arrives weeks later. That uncertainty is exactly what cash-pay pricing removes.

With Nocturne Health you pay one published price up front. There is no prior authorization, no referral chain, and no surprise bill after the fact. The home sleep apnea test is $169, ordered and interpreted by a board-certified sleep physician, and you can order it on its own or as part of an online sleep study with a consultation.

If testing confirms sleep apnea and you already want to begin therapy, a CPAP prescription is issued at no additional charge.

HSA and FSA eligibility

Home sleep testing and physician consultations are generally eligible medical expenses under Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA). You can pay with your HSA/FSA card or submit our itemized receipt for reimbursement. The IRS treats diagnostic testing and physician services as qualifying medical care; check your specific plan rules with your administrator.

Because our pricing is transparent and itemized, substantiating an HSA/FSA payment is straightforward — no chasing down mystery charges or reconciling an explanation of benefits.

Home sleep study cost: common questions

How much does a home sleep study cost without insurance?

At Nocturne Health, the home sleep apnea test is $169 as a standalone, cash-pay service — the price you see is the price you pay. That includes the FDA-approved device shipped to your door, physician ordering, and interpretation by a board-certified sleep physician, with your report emailed to you. There is no separate consultation fee unless you choose to add one, and no prior authorization or referral required.

Why is cash-pay pricing often simpler than using insurance?

When a sleep study is billed through insurance, the final amount you owe depends on your deductible, coinsurance, whether the lab and interpreting physician are in-network, and whether prior authorization was obtained. Patients frequently receive bills weeks later that differ from what they expected. Cash-pay pricing removes that uncertainty: you know the full cost up front, there is no prior authorization, and there are no surprise bills after the fact.

Is a home sleep study HSA or FSA eligible?

Yes. Home sleep testing and physician consultations are generally eligible expenses under Health Savings Accounts and Flexible Spending Accounts. We provide an itemized receipt you can submit for reimbursement or use to substantiate an HSA/FSA payment. Check with your plan administrator for your specific plan rules.

Is a full consultation required to order the test?

No. The $169 includes a brief telemedicine video visit — typically under 5 minutes — where a physician reviews your intake form and approves the test. There is no additional consultation fee. A full initial consultation ($199) is available if you want a longer discussion about your sleep, and is recommended — but not required — if your test shows sleep apnea.

What if I already know I want CPAP?

If your home sleep test confirms obstructive sleep apnea and you already want to begin CPAP therapy, a board-certified sleep physician can issue a CPAP prescription at no additional charge. You can then take that prescription to the equipment supplier of your choice. Learn more on our online CPAP prescription page.

How quickly will I get results after paying?

Most patients receive interpreted results within 72 hours of returning the device. Your sleep study report is emailed to you.
